Three Steps to Clean Your Oven
How did humanity ever survive before the invention of the microwave oven? Nobody remembers. The only certainty is that it forever changed the face of the popcorn industry. Microwave ovens are cooking everywhere. The smells range from exquisite to disgusting. They prove that smoke smell is not the worst odor that can waft through your airtight home. Following are three steps to clean your oven.
1. Clean the Interior
In this step, the oven does most of your work for you. What you are essentially doing here is cooking it clean.
• In a microwave-safe glass bowl, pour a cup or two of water. Add vinegar or citrus fruit slices. The acid helps clean the surfaces and the aroma helps remove the odor.
• Place the bowl in the oven and press start. Once the water is boiling and window on the door fogs, press the stop button. This step alone should get rid of that lingering popcorn smoke smell or fish odor.
• Wipe the interior clean with a clean, soft cloth or sponge. Avoid scratching the interior surfaces with abrasive cleaners, an old sponge or a dirty cloth. Repeat the previous step if necessary.
• If your oven has a removable turntable, wash the platter separately.
2. Clean the Oven Door and Gaskets
Clean the glass portion of the door with the acidic solution used on the interior. If necessary, use a conventional glass cleaner. Avoid getting that cleaner it on the gaskets.
Next, attempt to clean the gasket with plain water. If that doesn’t work, wipe it quickly with the acidic solution and wipe again with clean water.
3. Clean the Exterior
Wipe down the exterior with the acidic solution and dry with a paper towel. Be sure to clean the vent grill which captures oil, dust and odors.
